Author's Note: Writing short stories is not exactly one of my strengths...at all. I struggled with choosing a topic for almost a week, but then something just popped into my head. Lately someone in my family has been drinking a lot, and not thinking about the consequences that could come from it. No matter what anyone says, they don't realize what could happen, it's like talking to a wall. Even though this story isn't specifically about the person's life, the inspiration came from them.
One Moment Can Change Everything...
As the sound of finger nails violently scraping across a chalkboard pierced his eardrums, stabbing excruciating holes in the delicate tissue, the force of the impact astounded him. As the wind got knocked out of him, everything stopped. Dead. As if he had just plunged from the heights of the angels onto the concrete lost dreams of the damned.
Abruptly, it all ended. The sound, sliding on ice, feeling like he was the weight of a feather. Everything instantly transforming to nothing. Like a stoplight going straight from green to red. Over.
His brain was flooded with thoughts, and then suddenly went blank. Among the nothingness, there was a faint taste of an emotion still in existence, love. Putting every ounce of strength he had into magnifying that weak piece of emotion still stirring inside him, it all came back. But what came back was not exactly what he expected.
He was in the midst of life and death. As though he was traveling across the tight rope that decides if he lives or dies, as though one little twitch of the body, and everything would be over. The only picture that appeared in his head was his family, his wife, his baby girl.
Beep…
All of the special memories, every little moment flashed through his mind like a T.V. reel. He threw her a wink, like she would know what it meant, and she giggled the most innocent little giggle he had ever heard. He was not a cuddly man, but there was a glow inside him that would never go away, he would feel it for the rest of eternity.
At his wedding, he looked into his wife’s eyes, and she just stared back at him. But, the look, made him feel like the luckiest man in the world, she looked at him as if she couldn’t wait to start their new life together.
Another birthday party, probably the third time this month, but this one was different, it was his little girl’s fifth birthday. The pure joy across her face, as everyone sang the original birthday song, was absolutely indescribable.
Beep…
Even though there had been fights, nights on the couch, wars that he thought would never end, and just straight out rough times, although he never came upon a situation that he couldn’t get through with his family by his side. They are the air that he breathes. If this is where his life ended, despite the cause, he could pass knowing he lived life to the fullest with the love of a wife and a child.
Beep...Beep………..Beep……………..Beep.......Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
No! No!...She’s gone.”
Opening his eyes after hearing this disturbing sentence sends a shock up his spine. There is a paramedic over him, writing on a clipboard. Suddenly, something pinches his arm, he looks down to see an IV being inserted into the now frail skin on his arm. Trying to make sense of what’s going on, he looks to his side, lying next to him is the corpse of a little girl with curly blond hair. Feeling the fright build up inside him, he looks to his other side, only to see a body, still warm, of an older woman with identical gold curly locks. They shared something special, he could feel it. What had he done?
